COLIN J.VOGEL BVetMed, MRCVS, MCIArb,

I hold the degree of Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine awarded by London University in 1969, and am a member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. I joined a 2 vet practice in Fakenham Norfolk in 1969 and as sole principal and ultimately senior partner built it up to a 5.5 vet mixed practice to which I remained a consultant until August 2006.

I served on the Council of the British Equine Veterinary Association for many years, including five years as Honorary Information Officer. I represented the Association on the Veterinary Services Advisory Committee of the British Veterinary Association. I act as veterinary advisor to major animal insurers, having been instrumental in initiating both the BEVA/Equine Insurers Liaison Committee and more recently the Committee of Veterinary Advisors to Equine Insurance Companies. I am a member of the RCVS panel for vets inspecting riding establishments, and also carry out local authority inspections of boarding and breeding kennels etc. I serve on the committee of the Veterinary Association for Arbitration and Jurisprudence. I am a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine and a referee for the Joint Measurement Scheme. I am recognised as an Official Veterinarian for all the major species by DEFRA. I have lectured on veterinary matters for a number of post graduate courses.

I acted as veterinary correspondent for the Horse & Hound for 18 years. I am the author of various publications on veterinary matters for horse owners including Horse Ailments and Health Care (Ward Lock 1982), Equine Fitness (David & Charles 1987), How to Keep Your Horse Healthy (Blackwell Scientific Press 1989), The Stable Veterinary Handbook (David & Charles 1990), The RSPCA Complete Horse Care Manual 1995 and The Complete Horse Care Manual 2003 (Dorling & Kindersley), An Illustrated Guide to the Veterinary Care of the Horse (Manson Publishing 1996) , The Complete Performance Horse (David & Charles 1996) and The Horse’s Health Bible (David & Charles 2002). I have also published on small animal veterinary practice management topics. I have been invited to speak on veterinary topics at conferences both in the UK and abroad.

I am a Law Society listed expert witness, trained as a Single Joint Expert, and am a founder member of the Society of Expert Witnesses. I am a Member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. I am a member of the Equine & Animal Lawyers Association and a contributor to their publication Horse Law.

Recent instructions include criminal animal welfare cases in mammals, reptiles and birds, Welfare of Farmed Animals Regulations offences, professional negligence cases (mostly but not exclusively involving horses) and general claims for damages involving animals. I have been involved in lead cases in the fields of veterinary clinical negligence and animal welfare.
